In May 2023, a WHO side event will be held at Room XXVI, Palais des Nations, Geneva, Switzerland during the 17th session of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (EMRIP). The event aims to present the preliminary findings of a global literature review on the health of Indigenous Peoples, initiated in response to Resolution 76.16 on the Health of Indigenous Peoples adopted by the 76th World Health Assembly.
The WHO Director-General was requested to develop a Global Plan of Action for the Health of Indigenous Peoples in consultations with various stakeholders. The literature review includes an analysis of key health outcomes where Indigenous Peoples experience health inequities, the social determinants of health, and the availability, accessibility, acceptability, and quality of health services for Indigenous Peoples.
The keynote speaker at the event will be Valmaine Toki, a member of the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Other speakers include Pauliina (Lina) Nykänen-Rettaroli, Senior Technical Lead and Unit Head on Human Rights at WHO, Rodrigo Paillalef, a leading researcher for the development of the situation analysis and Member of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues, and Mariam Wallet Aboubakrine, a leading researcher for the development of the situation analysis and President of Association Tinhinan.
