Black Barbershop Health Initiative scheduled for Saturday in Evansville

In Evansville this Saturday, the annual Indiana Black Barbershop Health Initiative will be held, offering free health screenings and education on chronic diseases. This statewide effort aims to provide important health resources to the community, recognizing that Black men have the highest mortality rate in Indiana and prostate cancer is more prevalent among Black men than any other racial or ethnic group.

Black barbershops play a crucial role in the health of Black men as they often serve as a therapy center and a place of healing. The strong relationship between Black men and their barbers is built on trust, making barbershops an ideal setting for providing health screenings and education to encourage Black men to seek preventative medical care.

Seven participating locations in Evansville will host the event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., including Fila’s Designs, Jerald’s Barbershop, The Dapper Man’s Parlor, Lynch’s House of Coiffure, Going Forward Barber & Beauty Shop, Super Fresh, and Chinnos. This initiative is an important opportunity for Black men in the community to prioritize their health and well-being.
