85 percent of Italians purchase online at least monthly

The e-commerce sector in Italy is resilient and competitive, despite economic challenges such as inflation and the energy crisis impacting consumer spending patterns. A report by Idealo reveals that the purchasing habits of Italians are consistent, with a steady number of regular buyers for the third consecutive year. This demonstrates the strength of the e-commerce industry in Italy.

The report shows that 85% of digital users in Italy make at least one online purchase per month on average, with 24% making weekly purchases. There is a noticeable shift towards a more conscious and informed approach to online shopping, with 47% of consumers using price comparison tools to access product information and 46% searching for special offers and discounts. Italy’s online stores are competitive with international players, particularly in the sports and outdoor sector, where over 58% of the best offers come from Italian e-shops.

In addition to this, there is a growing interest in the second-hand market, especially in electronics, with a 4% increase in interest compared to the previous year. Used smartphones and notebooks are among the most sought-after products, indicating a shift towards sustainable and financially beneficial options. The report also outlines the preferences of different age groups, with electronics being popular among 45-55 year olds and fashion and accessories favored by 25-34 year olds.

This data provides valuable insights for online retailers to develop effective sales strategies and leverage price comparison platforms to reach a broader audience. Overall, the findings from the report shed light on the evolving landscape of e-commerce in Italy and the trends shaping consumer behavior in the digital marketplace.
