Loyola and Baker basketball players from Missoula receive honors

Johnston and O’Connor have been named the 406 MT Sports Athletes of the Month for their outstanding performances in leading their teams to Class B championships in March. Reynolds Johnston, a 6-foot-6 junior forward and three-time all-stater from Missoula Loyola, played a key role in his team’s success by averaging 17.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. His contributions helped Loyola achieve a perfect 25-0 record and secure a second consecutive state title. In the championship game, Johnston scored 22 points, secured 10 rebounds, and made six assists, leading his team to a resounding 69-54 victory over Fairview.

On the other hand, Madison O’Connor, a sophomore guard and two-time all-stater from Baker, played a pivotal role in leading her team to their first girls’ championship in 23 years. Throughout the tournament, O’Connor displayed remarkable consistency, averaging 25.6 points in three games and 25.7 points throughout Baker’s 22-4 season. She achieved high-scoring games of 35 points against Miles City, 34 against Ekalaka, and 33 against Fairview and Huntley Project. O’Connor reached the 1,000-point milestone for her career during a victory over St. Labre in late January, marking her 37th game overall beyond her achievements on the court; she also serves as the president of the sophomore class at Baker High since freshman year.

Overall, both Johnston and O’Connor were instrumental in their respective teams’ successes during the tournament season. Their hard work and dedication paid off as they led their teams to championship titles while also achieving personal milestones along the way.
