Detroit’s Technology Renaissance: Inside Newlab and the City’s Quest for Innovation

Newlab at Michigan Central, located in Detroit’s Corktown neighborhood, officially opened its doors in April 2023. This innovative space embodies the city’s story of revitalization and transformation.

Originally constructed from the remains of a crumbling book depository, Newlab is now home to 90 startups operating in various industries, from EV off-road vehicles to smart wheels designed for warehouse logistics. The facility aims to help entrepreneurs reduce the development cycle time for their products, according to CEO Cameron Lawrence.

One Detroit Producer Will Glover recently sat down with Lawrence to discuss the efforts being made to establish Detroit as a hub for technology and innovation. Through initiatives like Newlab, the city is working towards becoming a destination for cutting-edge advancements in various fields.
