Biden unites allies to ease tensions after debate

On Wednesday, Democratic Party governors gathered behind closed doors to discuss tensions within the party following President Joe Biden’s lackluster performance in the debate with former President Donald Trump. The meeting included nearly all of the country’s 23 Democratic governors, with some attending virtually and others in person. Among them were potential replacements for Biden, such as Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and California Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The meeting was not organized by the White House but was a result of a call by Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, who chairs the Democratic Governors Association, to discuss the debate. Some governors publicly stated that they wanted to discuss Biden’s health during the meeting, with Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky emphasizing the importance of ensuring Biden’s well-being. Others, like Governor Wes Moore of Maryland, expressed unwavering support for Biden and dismissed any notions of seeking the nomination if Biden were to drop out.

Expectations were high within the Democratic Party regarding the meeting, with even major donors like John Morgan urging the campaign to pay close attention to the proposals of Governor Beshear, who has had success in a predominantly Republican state. The meeting was seen as an opportunity for the governors to have an open discussion with Biden and show solidarity with the candidate. Among the topics likely to be discussed were Biden’s performance in the debate and his overall health and campaign strategy.
