Most not too long ago, seven existing civil engineering students and alumni from the College, which includes two previous bridge group captains, traveled to Mkhulamini, Eswatini in Africa to create a footbridge that will deliver access for the Mkhulamini neighborhood to the rest of the Manzini area. Velez, who graduated from FAU in December with a master’s degree in civil engineering and is now a style engineer for Structures International, participated in the project throughout the 2019-20 year. Due to COVID, the group was unable to travel – but Velez was in a position to oversee the bridge efforts from South Florida. Quickly forward to this year, when she ultimately produced the trip overseas to assistance create the bridge her group initially developed.
The group also lived with members of the neighborhood neighborhood in Mkhulamini for quite a few weeks, so a deep cultural exchange involving the students and the Eswatini persons was impactful.
