The U.S. U-17 team is set to face Germany in the round of 16 of the U-17 World Cup on Tuesday at 3:30 am ET. This will be their second chance to reach the quarterfinals in 18 years, having appeared in seven out of eight tournaments held during that time period. In their lone quarterfinals appearance since going back-to-back in the last-eight in 2001 and 2003, the baby Yanks made a deep run until they came up against England, the eventual winners, in 2017. This time around, Gonzalo Segares’ team is led by Liverpool youngster Keylor Figueroa (son of former Honduras international Meynor), Charlotte forward Nimfasha Berchimas (three goals thus far) and San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Cruz Medina. The U.S. U-17 team has been to the World Cup semifinals just once, when Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley and Kyle Beckerman were the up-and-coming stars all the way back in 1999.
