After being traded to the Minnesota Vikings just over a year ago, running back Cam Akers is expected to re-sign with the team pending a physical. Originally drafted in the second round in 2020 by the Los Angeles Rams, Akers played in six games as a rotational back behind Alexander Mattison before tearing his Achilles in November. However, he has been unsigned since his contract expired in March.
If Akers re-signs with the Vikings, he will reunite with head coach Kevin O’Connell, who was the former offensive coordinator for the Rams. It’s uncertain where Akers will stand on the running back depth chart as the Vikings also have Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler in the backfield. In his six games for the Vikings last season, Akers had just over 200 scrimmage yards and caught 11 passes as a third-down option.
Akers is known for his quick recovery from injuries, having returned to play for the Rams just five months after tearing his Achilles and helping them win a Super Bowl. He had a career-high of 786 rushing yards for the Rams in the following season.
