ByteDance has decided to temporarily suspend the reward functions of TikTok Lite as they work with the European Commission to investigate whether the app is complying with its obligations regarding transparency and protection of minors. TikTok Lite, an extension application of TikTok that rewards users for watching and interacting with videos, is currently being tested in Spain and France.
The reward mechanism in TikTok Lite has drawn attention from the European Union, prompting an investigation into its impact on minors and how ByteDance is addressing potential risks such as addictive behaviors. In a statement, ByteDance announced that they always collaborate constructively with authorities and have decided to suspend the reward system on TikTok Lite in response to concerns raised.
Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, acknowledged this decision and commended ByteDance for taking steps to protect children from potential risks associated with social media platforms. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that children are safe online and welcomed TikTok’s decision to suspend the reward program in the EU. Cases against TikTok continue due to concerns about its addictive potential, but Breton highlighted the need for stronger regulations through the Digital Services Law to safeguard Europe’s online space.
