7 Things to Know About the Rabies Vaccine

In 2024, Vietnam reported 27 deaths due to rabies. Despite widespread awareness, many people still fall victim to this disease because they are not vaccinated after being bitten or scratched by animals. Dr. Bui Thanh Phong, Medical Manager of the VNVC Vaccination System, emphasized the importance of timely vaccination to prevent rabies and its high mortality rate.

Dr. Phong outlined seven key points regarding rabies vaccination to ensure people understand the importance and are vaccinated promptly. Firstly, it is essential to receive the vaccine early after an animal bite to produce specific antibodies that prevent the rabies virus from reaching the nervous system. Secondly, vaccination should be accompanied by anti-rabies serum for enhanced effectiveness. Even if the animal appears healthy after a bite, vaccination is still necessary as the virus can have a long incubation period before symptoms manifest.

Thirdly, contrary to popular beliefs, people vaccinated against rabies do not need to abstain from sexual activity. However, during the vaccination period, it is advisable to avoid strenuous physical activities and substances that may reduce the efficacy of the vaccine. Fourthly, a single shot of the vaccine is insufficient to provide long-term immunity; hence a full regimen prescribed by a healthcare professional is necessary to prevent illness and death. Fifthly, pregnant women can safely receive the rabies vaccine without altering their vaccination schedule or any evidence of fetal abnormalities due to vaccination making it a crucial preventive measure for expectant mothers.

Lastly, modern rabies vaccines available in Vietnam are safe and highly effective; dispelling misconceptions about their safety.

The cost of rabies vaccines varies depending on the facility and type of vaccine ranging from 250,000 VND to 500,000 VND per dose.

To access these facilities such as hospitals, health centers and clinics is essential for receiving timely and effective prevention against this deadly disease.

In conclusion, understanding the importance of Rabies Vaccination and following medical advice can help individuals protect themselves and their communities from this deadly disease that has a high mortality rate in Vietnam.
