Important Health and Safety Tips for Independence Day

In Grand Rapids, Michigan, health officials are reminding people to be cautious when using fireworks this Fourth of July. Amber Davenport, a regional clinical director for WellNow Urgent Care, emphasized the importance of being vigilant due to the increased risk of burn injuries during the holiday period.

Davenport provided some practical tips on how to prevent burn injuries while using fireworks. She advised people to be careful when lighting them, keep a safe distance, and ensure that children are supervised at all times. In case of a burn injury, Davenport recommended having a first aid kit on hand and applying cool, moist compresses to the affected area.

Apart from burn injuries, Davenport also highlighted the need to be mindful of heat exhaustion during the hot summer weather. She advised people to limit their time in the sun during mid-day and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Additionally, she warned against consuming excessive amounts of caffeine or alcohol as they can lead to dehydration.

By following these safety precautions and taking steps to prevent burn injuries and heat exhaustion, people can ensure that their Fourth of July celebration is safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.
