Introducing the Philadelphia Phillies’ inaugural mental health director

In her second season with the Philadelphia Phillies, Dr. Deanna Nobleza has taken on the role of mental health director with a mission to help players and coaches navigate the mental challenges of baseball. She understands the demands of professional sports, including the rigorous travel schedule and time away from families, which is why she emphasizes that mental health is just as important as physical health.

Initially, Nobleza was concerned about the stigma associated with mental health but was pleasantly surprised by the players’ openness to initiatives that prioritize mental well-being. She cannot reveal specifics about her sessions with the team, but she has addressed the pressure that comes with playing in Philadelphia, reminding players that it’s part of their training for a professional career.

Nobleza hopes to make a lasting impact beyond wins and losses by promoting mental well-being among athletes. She believes that seeking help is a sign of bravery and essential for players to improve their game both on and off the field. Her work paves the way for other women to enter the mental health field in sports, hoping to break down barriers and normalize seeking help for athletes struggling with mental health issues.
