Breaking the Stigma: Garden City Elementary School’s Green Ribbon Award and Mental Health Initiatives”.

Garden City Elementary School has recently received a Green Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education, recognizing their efforts in reducing environmental impact, improving health and wellness, and offering sustainability education. As part of this achievement, school leaders are working to break down the stigma surrounding discussions about children’s mental health.

On National Children’s Mental Health Day, state and local officials will meet with Dr. Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services at Garden City Elementary School. The goal of this event is to promote open conversations and provide support for students, families, and caregivers.

During the event, there will be a focus on mental health awareness, with leaders engaging in conversations with students about their well-being. The goal is to provide resources and intervention opportunities within Rhode Island schools. This event coincides with National Mental Health Awareness Month and will kick off at 9:30 a.m., marking a significant step towards supporting the mental well-being of children in the community.

The new school at Garden City Elementary School includes wellness spaces that promote mental health, providing a safe space for students to talk about their feelings and concerns. The tour by Dr. Delphin-Rittmon will showcase these spaces and how they are integrated into the school’s daily operations.

In conclusion, Garden City Elementary School’s recognition as a Green Ribbon school along with their efforts towards breaking down stigma surrounding mental health is an important step towards supporting the overall well-being of children in the community. This event marks an opportunity for leaders to engage in open conversations about mental health awareness and provide resources for intervention within Rhode Island schools.
