Dave Portnoy, the founder of Barstool Sports, was captured on camera during Game One of the Eastern Conference Semifinals between the Boston Celtics and the Milwaukee Bucks at TD Garden on May 1, 2022, in Boston, Massachusetts. Portnoy, a local sports enthusiast, is renowned for his love of sports and pizza. The photo was taken by Adam Glanzman/Getty Images.
Lately, Portnoy has been making headlines for placing a $200,000 bet on the Philadelphia Phillies to win the 2024 World Series. If the Phillies emerge victorious in this highly anticipated championship series, Portnoy will stand to earn nearly $1.5 million in profits.
Despite being a Boston sports fan at heart, Portnoy’s decision to back the Phillies shows that he has confidence in their ability to win their first championship since 2008. His winning streak was halted when his pick for the Stanley Cup playoffs – the Edmonton Oilers – lost out in seven games.
However, Portnoy remains optimistic about the Phillies’ prospects in the upcoming season. In fact, with an impressive record of .639 so far this season and a strong lineup that includes Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, many experts believe that they are serious contenders for winning their first World Series title since 1980.
According to Fangraphs.com, which tracks Major League Baseball statistics and odds, there is only a slim chance that the Phillies will come out on top in 2024: just a 14.1% likelihood of winning it all. Still, with such strong odds stacked against them – behind only two other teams (the Dodgers and Yankees) – it’s clear that Portnoy is confident that they have what it takes to win big next year.
