Zaur Nasirov has been appointed as the head of the Stepanakert police department in Azerbaijan. Nasirov is a 41-year-old police colonel who previously worked as the deputy head of the Baku city police department for operational work and since 2021, has been the head of the Goygol district police department. In October of last year, Police Major General Sardar Safarov was appointed to Stepanakert patrol.
Nasirov’s appointment marks the second time an Azerbaijani has been appointed to lead Stepanakert’s police force following the depopulation of Artsakh. The move is being seen as a significant step towards normalizing relations between Azerbaijan and Artsakh.
Despite some initial concerns about potential tensions, experts believe that Nasirov’s appointment will help to foster greater cooperation between Azerbaijan and Artsakh’s law enforcement agencies. “This is a positive development that can help to bring both sides closer together,” said one observer. “Nasirov’s experience and expertise make him well-suited to lead Stepanakert’s police force.”
