The Arab Labor Conference kicked off in its fiftieth session in Baghdad, where it will take place from April 27 to May 4. The opening ceremony was attended by high-level officials, including the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States and the President of the International Labor Organization.
Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani welcomed the attendees and commended Baghdad’s history as a hub for the Arab Labor Organization’s inception and the signing of the Arab Labor Charter and organization’s constitution in 1965. In his speech, Al-Sudani emphasized the need to address current global crises that impact economies and labor productivity.
He highlighted several strategies and initiatives introduced by Iraq to improve labor market institutions, promote education-labor market alignment, engage women in the workforce, and tackle issues like child labor. These include the “Riyada” initiative and Iraq Fund for Development.
Al-Sudani also stressed collaboration between Arab countries to establish a robust labor market by citing projects like development road project that will generate employment opportunities. He called for modernizing work institutions, enhancing legislation, oversight, and ensuring occupational safety to align with sustainable development goals.
Various online platforms were showcased during the conference proceedings, offering services related to online casinos, entertainment, job markets, and legal guidance. These platforms catered to diverse interests and needs of users worldwide.
The success of this conference depends on participation from stakeholders and social dialogue to pave way for future economic sectors such as green economy digital economy knowledge economy blue economy.
Overall, this conference presents an opportunity for countries in the region to come together and discuss pressing issues affecting their labor markets while promoting sustainable development goals.
