Amazon Fresh May Be Moving Away from Just Walk Out Technology

Amazon Fresh is revolutionizing its checkout process with the introduction of smart Dash Carts. The retailer has been working tirelessly to revamp its grocery strategy and is now shifting its focus to achieve success with its Fresh business. According to a report from The Information, Amazon’s next generation of Fresh stores will not feature the Just Walk Out technology, but will instead rely on Dash Carts for a seamless checkout experience.

In August, Amazon unveiled redesigned Fresh stores in Schaumburg and Oak Lawn, Ill., as part of its efforts to create a top-tier grocery shopping experience. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy acknowledged that the company’s venture into food retailing has faced challenges due to external circumstances, but expressed optimism about the enhancements being made to the Amazon Fresh operation. He mentioned ongoing experiments with selection, checkout formats, assortment, and price points, highlighting several promising outcomes.

Tony Hoggett, Amazon SVP of grocery stores, revealed that the new batch of Fresh stores will not use Just Walk Out technology. Existing Amazon Fresh locations will also be updated to “version two” stores without the technology. Instead, the retailer will implement Dash Carts – smart shopping carts equipped with scanners and screens, allowing shoppers to check out as they shop. Dash Carts enhance the shopping experience by facilitating easier navigation, discovering new items, and finding the best deals.

Amazon will continue to utilize Just Walk Out technology in a limited number of Fresh stores in the U.K. and some Amazon Go stores. The company based in Seattle is a major player in the food retail industry and ranked No. 2 on Progressive Grocer’s 2023 list of top food and consumables retailers in North America
