ACC’s Technology and Cybersecurity Apprenticeship Program Launches in Partnership with Texas Department of Information Resources

The partnership between Austin Community College (ACC) and the Texas Department of Information Resources has resulted in the establishment of a new technology and cybersecurity apprenticeship program for students. This program is designed to provide students with practical skills in a hands-on environment while furthering their education.

The pilot program, which was launched on June 28th at ACC’s Highland Campus, will serve as a model for future partnerships with other business and industry sectors. The Texas Department of Information Resources (DIR) will be the employer for the pilot program, with ACC planning to replicate this model in future collaborations.

Over the past year, more than 100 students have completed apprenticeships in various fields such as health sciences and manufacturing. This success highlights the potential benefits of creating positions in IT cybersecurity that do not require a four-year degree but instead focus on relevant experience and knowledge.

Texas Representative Donna Howard expressed her optimism about the partnership, emphasizing its potential to benefit both ACC students and state departments involved. She highlighted the importance of creating these positions that prioritize practical experience over traditional educational requirements.

The new technology and cybersecurity apprenticeship program is part of House Bill 584, which became effective on September 1, 2023. This bill allows state information departments to collaborate with public junior colleges or technical institutes to address shortages in the state’s information resources. The partnership between ACC and Texas Department of Information Resources demonstrates how this bill can be put into action to create opportunities for students while addressing workforce needs.
