Abu Dhabi Ports Group Signs 20-Year Concession Agreement to Revamp Angola’s Luanda Multi-Purpose Terminal

Abu Dhabi Ports Group has recently signed a 20-year concession agreement (with an option to extend for another ten years) with the Luanda Ports Authority to revamp and manage the Luanda Multi-Purpose Terminal in Angola. The terminal is located in the main maritime gateway of Angola, handling over 76% of containers and general cargo in the country.

As part of the agreements, Abu Dhabi Ports Group acquired an 81% stake in a joint venture with Unicargas and Multiparks to operate the terminal. Additionally, they also acquired a 90% stake in another joint venture with these companies to offer services to the terminal and the broader Angolan logistics market.

The company plans to invest US$251 million over the next three years (2024-2026) to modernize the terminal and establish a logistics center, with potential for an increase up to US$379 million based on market demand. The port plays a critical role in providing transshipment services in Central West Africa, supporting maritime trade in landlocked countries like Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia.

Abu Dhabi Ports Group’s collaboration with Angolan stakeholders aims to transform Luanda Multi-Purpose Terminal into a modern multi-purpose facility, significantly enhancing logistical capabilities and driving economic growth in the region. Under this agreement, Abu Dhabi Ports Group will revamp the current multi-purpose terminal into a container and vehicle handling terminal, expand concession area, and upgrade infrastructure. The redevelopment is set to be completed by Q3 2026, significantly increasing container and vehicle handling capacities.

Furthermore, Abu Dhabi Ports Group will collaborate with Unicargas on integrated logistics and shipping services through a joint venture. This move leverages global experience and local capabilities to support customers across Angola and neighboring countries.

In addition to this collaboration, Abu Dhabi Ports Group is committed to supporting maritime operations in Angola and related sectors by deploying assets such as accommodation ships for offshore crews and supply ships for offshore platforms through strategic partnerships and investments. Through these efforts, Abu Dhabi Ports Group aims to drive operational efficiency while contributing positively towards economic development of Angola and Central West Africa region.
