A New Dawn for North Charleston: The Grand Opening of the State-of-the-Art Sports Complex

On Thursday, the city of North Charleston celebrated the grand opening of its new North Charleston Sports Complex, a modern sports facility that will provide community members with comprehensive recreational opportunities. The complex, which cost $25 million to build after the old Danny Jones Athletic Center was demolished over a year ago, features a 25-meter competitive pool, a multi-use gymnasium for basketball, volleyball, and badminton, as well as outdoor tennis courts, a roller rink, and a playing field.

Mayor Reggie Burgess expressed his gratitude to the citizens for their support and tax dollars that helped make the new sports facility a reality. He emphasized the city’s commitment to community and wellness, providing residents with various sporting activities to enrich their lives. Burgess highlighted the importance of the facility in building young athletes’ minds and drawing from his own experience at the former center in 1970 where he was introduced to various sports that shaped his career.

Visitors were invited to tour the complex on opening day until 7 p.m., with tennis courts and roller rinks available for use starting the next day. The full facility officially opens to the public on Monday and aims to elevate North Charleston’s status as a premier destination for sporting events by attracting regional and national tournaments that will boost the local economy through sports tourism.
