A Nashville native, 21-year-old Gretchen Walsh, made history at the U.S. Olympic Swimming trials by breaking the world record for the fastest women’s 100-meter butterfly. She surpassed the previous record by 30 milliseconds with a time of 55.18 seconds in a semi-final heat. This achievement dethrones a Swedish swimmer who previously held the title with a time of 55.48 seconds at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Walsh, a Harpeth Hall graduate, received praise from her school for her remarkable accomplishment, which even caught the attention of Olympic legend Michael Phelps. Currently swimming for the University of Virginia team, Walsh still needs to secure her spot on the Olympic team through further competition at the trials. With the strong support of her hometown, she is set to compete again on Sunday night as the trials continue through the following weekend.
